Sazonblea 2025

Sazonblea 2025

Our Mijente member bi-annual gathering that weaves political, organizing, social, and cultural work.

Preparing the Way for A New Leadership Circle

Mijente’s Leadership Circle (LC) plays an important role in steering our organization’s direction – and is made up of key members, advisors, and movement leaders. Over the past several years, the current Leadership Circle members supported crucial decision making and strategic planning.

Now, the time has come to revamp and reset the Leadership Circle. This year we are excitedly transitioning to a new Leadership Circle formation, opening the way for new insights and stewardship. If you meet the requirements, we encourage you to apply! Below you can learn more about the work of the Leadership Circle and the requirements for new members.

The Work of the Current LC

As key achievements, the LC developed a five year vision following the 2020 election, designed various political endorsement processes, and has been a critical sounding board for our annual convenings of Sazonblea and Lánzate. LC members play critical roles inside different sectors and in their localities and this insight has opened many new opportunities. We owe this group of people who have served, including some of whom have done so since the formation of this group in 2017, a great deal of gratitude.

We’ve done reflections with current LC members and staff and have a new format we want to share and are opening it up for current members to apply to serve on the Leadership Circle. Here you’ll find information on what it entails and how to apply.

Leadership Circle Structure

The Leadership Circle will be composed of up to 25 people and meet quarterly at a regular time and day based on the majority of the group’s schedule of availability. Additionally, the LC will meet in person once a year. It will be a space for both input and discussion on Mijente’s direction as well as a space of learning and development of analysis. Meetings can include: featured speakers on identified topics, sharing from folks involved in different aspects of Mijente’s work and discussions on areas of the LC’s decision making and/or needed input.

Leadership Circle Responsibilities

Decisions made by the Leadership Circle include all political endorsements, location and goals/focus of Sazonblea and input on the goals/focus of major convenings. In addition the LC will help develop and formally approve the multi-year objectives of Mijente. LC members will receive advance notice and accessible notes of past and upcoming meetings as well as regular updates. There may also be opportunities to represent Mijente in larger coalitions and/or movement convenings.

Requirements to Apply

  • Must have been a Mijente member for at least two years
  • Must be a participating member (determined by attendance to events, recruitment of members, participation in organizational calls, volunteering, engagement on social media)
  • Must have the availability to attend planned Leadership Circle meetings
  • Must have some familiarity with Mijente’s principles of unity and our work

Applications will be accepted until June 27th. We’ll host conversations with interested folks and will make a decision in early July. The new LC will convene in person in August or September as we gear up for Mijente’s 10 year anniversary and Sazonblea this October in Chicago.

5 Important Reports That Meet This Moment

We know that Information is power. Check out these five essential reports that Mijente collaborated on with key partners and learn more!

1. Automating Deportation, 2024

Check out “Automating Deportation: The Artificial Intelligence Behind the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration Enforcement Regime”. Our report with Just Futures Law (JFL) dives straight into how the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is using AI to step up detentions and deportations– all at the expense of our immigrants, families, and the larger U.S community. Big Tech, big corporations, and private sector representatives can’t wait to cash in on the exploitation of our gente, but we might fight back.

2. The Dirty Side of Clean Energy, 2024

Mijente and IDEBAJO commissioned research for the report “The Dirty Side of Clean Energy”. It revealed how so-called clean energy initiatives in Puerto Rico have led to environmental damage, displacement, and higher living costs. Meanwhile, private, corporate megaprojects and their investors have profited immensely at the expense of the people. Our findings unquestionably exposed the truth: Industrial-scale, corporate, and hedge fund-owned solar projects are not a clean alternative to the existing electrical system.

3. Sabotaging Sanctuary, 2022

In partnership with Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition (CIRC), JFL, and others, we put out “Sabotaging Sanctuary: How Data Brokers Give ICE Backdoor Access To Colorado’s Data and Jails”. For years community members have raised concerns about how our personal information falls into the hands of Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) — including when sanctuary policies are present. It has now been confirmed that ICE uses technology to get around policies meant to limit their cooperation with local law enforcement.

4. Futuro y Esperanza, 2022

Mijente proudly released the first national comprehensive study on Latinx attitudes about policing and safety in the United States and Puerto Rico, “Futuro y Esperanza: Latinx Perspectives on Policing and Safety”. When it comes to public safety, for us the main takeaway is that there is a lot of hope in the role that our gente can play in the fight against police violence and the safety of our families. We believe in our gente and our communities, that together we can envision and build futures beyond the constraints of punitive measures.

5. Deadly Digital Wall, 2021

For years we have been sounding the alarm on the harms of U.S. government agencies expanding their use of technology and surveillance to monitor and target our communities at large, with a key focus on migrants. Our report “The Deadly Digital Wall”, with No Border Wall Coalition and JFL, shares how the expansion into biometric surveillance, collecting DNA, voice, and facial data in border communities are being used as the testing grounds for surveillance nationally
